James Franklin Houghton was born December 1, 1827 in Cambridge, Massachusetts and arrived in California in 1850. He was founder
of the Pine and Houghton lumber firm. Houghton was a civil engineer and served as Surveyor General of California from 1862-1868.
During this time, Houghton defined the boundary lines betweeen California and Nevada and secured legislation in Washington
to quit land titles in California. He died in San Francisco January 31, 1903.
